The California Interior Design Examination (IDEX®) is a state-specific test that certifies professional competence in both commercial and residential interior design. It is the only recognized exam required for certification in the state of California and is administered by the California Council for Interior Design Certification (CCIDC).
What is the IDEX® California Exam?
– The IDEX is a comprehensive, 150-question, multiple-choice exam that candidates must complete within 3 hours.
– The content tests knowledge of California Building Code, Title 24, business law, ethics, schematics, space planning, construction documents, finishing specifications, lighting, and contract administration specific to California practices.
– Passing this exam is a mandatory requirement to use the title “Certified Interior Designer” or “CID” in California.

Streamlined Path: For those already certified from a national board (e.g., NCIDQ), a streamlined route is available.
Official transcripts and proof of experience are required with the application, which can be submitted year-round via the CCIDC website.
